Sittin’ Tight

All’s well here at Jekyll Harbor Marina (Jekyll Island, Georgia). We’re just sittin’ tight while Sandy passes to the east of us…

Here’s a video we took this morning a little after 9 if you’re interested in seeing what the weather’s like where we are:

    Hey Phill & Mare!
Are you flying an American flag? Looks like one in the video. Is that a thing you have to do?

Glad that you are far enough south to avoid the brunt of the Frankenstorm. Hope it’s not too bad.

      Hi Heather,

The American flag up the mast is a “courtesy flag”. Flying the host country’s flag is a gesture of respect, so when we go over to the Bahamas, we’ll switch the American flag out for the Bahamian flag. We’re flying a much bigger Canadian flag off the stern of the boat, but it’s all wrapped up today because it was flapping too much in the high wind.

Despite the high wind, it’s not bad at all. It sounds like everyone at home might be more affected by the Frankenstorm than we will be here…

    Hi Maryl & Phill:
Thanks for the video. Great idea to remove your bimini and dodger to prepare for Hurricane Sandy winds. Where is the Canadian flag and NSC burgee? Is it safer to sail with an American flag?
    Take care of yourselves,
    Patricia & David

    • Maryl says:

      Hi Pat & David,

See my reply to Heather about the American flag up our mast. We have the NSC burgee on board, and we’ll raise it when we get to the Bahamas (we’ll send a picture to y’all at the club…Phill and I are saying “Y’all” quite a bit lately) ;).

      • Patricia Cassidy-Hortop says:

        Hey Y’all:

It was haul out yesterday and we went to the club last night for the Halloween party. I was dressed as “Petty Officer Patty” and David was my “First Mate”. One of the feature groups was the “Spice Girls” (Randy and Dan in drag, Barb, Theresa and Pat). Randy and Dan both shaved off their mustaches for the occasion. Randy has had his mustache since 1978 and no one has ever seen him without it. I was telling everyone that they shaved their armpits and legs too. Lots of dancing . . .

How many flags will you end up with?

        • Maryl says:

That sounds like one NSC Halloween party we should not have missed!

Not sure how many flags we’ll have at the end of it…we’ll have the U.S., Bahamas and Turks & Caicos for sure, and hopefully beyond.

  4. Anton Lebar says:

    Hi Phil, Meryl,
Awesome video clip!!! Glad Sandy was out in the Atlantic. I looked at the weather and there isn’t much around you for a while.
Sharon and I were down in Virginia all week staring from last Saturday to yesterday. We spent some time inland and then went to Virginia Beach for a few days. We were actually planning on going all the way to North Carolina, maybe even South Carolina, but decided not to due to approaching Sandy. We didn’t quite know where you two were but had we been close enough, we would have contacted Heather for your whereabouts, and we may have come to say hi.

    Hello Maryl;

I’m glad you are doing alright. BTW, I’ve been reading your blogs – very interesting so far. Best of luck to you and Phill!
